Burglar-proof Victorian door

The Guardian, Saturday 19 September 2009

How do I make a Victorian front door burglar-proof without resorting to a grille or screen?

DIY expert Julian Cassell, co-author of DIY: Know-How With Show-How (Dorling Kindersley, £25), says your best option is a five-lever lock and a night latch (both should be kitemarked BS3621), and make sure the night latch has a deadlocking option. That way, even if a burglar breaks the glass, they can’t open the door unless you’ve left the key in the lock. Add hinge bolts in the hinging edge and mortise bolts in the opening edge. This is one area where price reflects quality and security, so don’t be tempted with cut-price alternatives – you should be looking to spend around £100.
